Pardon Our Dust UPDATE

LANE Construction continues with utility relocation on GRTC Pulse, a new bus rapid transit system serving the Richmond Region, from Rocketts Landing to Willow Lawn. Work continues along the south side of Broad Street, between Thompson and Laurel Streets.

Multiple work crews are working in multiple locations along the corridor. Temporary closures of the curb lane, adjacent sidewalk and bus stops located in work zones will continue through mid-October.
Work hours are Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Schedules are progress- and weather-dependent.

TWO-WEEK LOOK-AHEAD:

For the week of Monday, October 3 to Saturday, October 8:

Utility relocation work will continue on the south side of Broad Street with multiple crews working in multiple locations. This includes daytime work zones (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) in the following locations:

  • Eastward from Lombardy Street to Harrison Street
  • Eastward from Meadow Street to Laurel Street
  • Eastward from Thompson Street
Utility work will also require nightly work zones (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) from Tuesday, October 4 to Friday, October 7. These will occur laterally across eastbound and westbound directions of Broad Street at DMV Drive (between N. Davis Ave. and Strawberry St.). Alternating, temporary single or double lane closures will occur. One travel lane will remain open in each direction. Motorists should expect lane closures between approximately N. Davis Ave. and Strawberry St.

For the week of Monday, October 10 to Saturday, October 15: 

Utility relocation work will continue on the south side of Broad Street, moving eastward from Thompson St. to Laurel St.

Crews are expected to begin Phase I of Station Construction.
  • WHERE: This is expected to occur on westbound Broad St, between Allison and Strawberry St, along the curb lane and sidewalk.
  • WHAT: Sidewalk work
  • IMPACTS: Temporary closures of the westbound curb lane and adjacent sidewalk, as well as temporary loss of street parking, from Allison St to Strawberry St.
Once work in this location is complete, crews are expected to continue this work in the median of Broad Street, from Thompson Street to Laurel Street. Impacts include some sectional closures of the inside median lanes, in both the eastbound and westbound directions, where work is occurring. 

It is important to note that field conditions can change rapidly and LANE's goal is to work safely and swiftly to minimize impacts to the areas where they work. The schedule is progress- and weather-dependent, and can change in the field as conditions evolve.

Nightly, Temporary Lane Closures on Broad Street

Utility work for the Pulse continues along the south side of eastbound Broad Street, between Thompson and Laurel Streets. Within this area, specific utility work will occur nightly at DMV Drive (between N. Davis Avenue and Strawberry Street on Broad Street), beginning Tuesday, October 4, 2016, weather and progress-dependent.

WHO:              DB Contractor, LANE Construction

WHAT:             Nightly single or double lane closures of eastbound and westbound Broad Street at DMV Drive (between Strawberry Street and N. Davis Avenue) while utility work occurs in Broad Street. A travel lane will remain open in each direction of Broad Street during this nightly work.

WHEN:            Beginning Tuesday, October 4, 2016, work hours will be from 
6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Work is estimated to end by 6 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2016. These dates are weather and progress-dependent.
WHERE:           The following areas will be impacted with single and/or double lane closures, as necessary, to accommodate this work. One travel lane will remain open in each direction. Motorists should expect lane closures between approximately Strawberry Street and N. Davis Ave.:
·         Estimated Tuesday night (10/4): On eastbound and westbound Broad Street (alternating lane closures as work moves from one side of Broad St to the other).
·         Estimated Wednesday night (10/5): On eastbound Broad Street (up to two eastbound lanes will temporarily close, with one eastbound lane remaining open).
·         Estimated Thursday night (10/6): On westbound Broad Street (up to two westbound lanes will temporarily close, with one westbound lane remaining open).

BRIEF: It is important to note that field conditions can change rapidly and LANE's goal is to work safely and swiftly to minimize impacts to the areas where they work. The schedule is progress- and weather-dependent. Any bus stops within the work zone will be temporarily closed during construction hours.  Pedestrian pathway detours and street lane closure signs will be posted accordingly. Please follow construction signage and be aware of construction workers and vehicles within the work zone(s). Pedestrians are advised to follow work zone signage in the sidewalk area. Travelers may notice temporary steel plates on Broad Street while this work is performed.

Work hours are Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is important to note that field conditions happen rapidly and LANE’s goal is to work safely and swiftly to minimize impacts to the areas where they work. LANE is committed to ensuring that all businesses have access to entry points and deliveries throughout construction. The schedule is progress and weather-dependent, and can change in the field as conditions evolve. LANE is permitted to perform work anywhere on Broad Street between Thompson and Laurel, but they are doing their best to notify each block with appropriate signage as work progresses.

This week (Mon., Sept. 19 to Fri., Sept. 23), utility work moved eastward from Strawberry Street to Meadow Street. These operations also moved westward from Shafer Street to Harrison Street. Additionally, crews worked eastward from Thompson Street to Wayne Street.

2-Week Look-Ahead
For the week of Sept. 26 - Oct. 1, utility work will continue in both eastward and westward directions. Additional crews will continue moving eastward on setting of junction boxes. Work zones continue to be on the south side of Broad St., in the following locations:

  • Eastward from Meadow Street to Lombardy Street
  • Eastward from Wayne Street to Meadow Street 
  • Westward from Harrison Street to Ryland Street

For the week of October 3 - 8, utility work will continue. Work zones continue to be on the south side of Broad St., in the following locations:

  • Eastward from Meadow Street to Laurel Street  
  • Eastward from Thompson Street to Laurel Street  
  • Westward from Ryland Street to Lombardy Street  

Tues., October 4, 2016 -- Phase I Station Construction expected to begin
As early as Tues., Oct. 4, crews are expected to begin Phase I of Station Construction: saw-cutting and demolition. This is expected to occur on westbound Broad St., between Allison and Strawberry St., along the curb lane and sidewalk. This work is expected to take one (1) to five (5) days in this location, but this schedule is weather and progress-dependent. Impacts include temporary closures of the westbound curb lane and adjacent sidewalk, as well as temporary loss of street parking, from Allison St. to Strawberry St.

Once work in this location is complete, crews are expected to continue this work in the median of Broad Street, from Thompson Street to Laurel Street. Impacts include some sectional closures of the inside median lanes, in both the eastbound and westbound directions, where work is occurring. The entire stretch of median lanes from Thompson to Laurel will not be closed at this time.

Pulse Construction in October Shifts to Stations

We are getting closer to station construction, folks!

Sidewalk work in preparation for Pulse station construction activities is scheduled to begin Tuesday, October 4, 2016, weather and progress-dependent.

The first area expected to see sidewalk work will be between Strawberry Street and Allison Street on the north side of Broad Street. This sidewalk work will prepare for an eastbound dedicated left turn (see map below). Additionally, this sidewalk work will complement the future Allison Street Westbound platform, located west of Allison Street in the median.

Final utility work on the south side of Broad Street between Thompson Street and Laurel Street, which has been ongoing since August 16, 2016, is scheduled to be complete by mid-October. 

Upon completion of this utility work, station construction work is expected to begin in the median of Broad Street between Thompson Street and Laurel Street. Initial activities will lay the groundwork for the stations. This groundwork will include demolition of concrete medians and curbs to facilitate station construction. Stations expected to be constructed between October 2016 and March 2017 in this area include: Allison Eastbound; VCU & VUU Westbound and Eastbound; and Arts District Westbound and Eastbound. 

Curb and median work will be on-going in the coming months, with further updates issued as progress is made. All work is weather and progress-dependent. Work hours remain Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

GRTC Pulse Quarterly Public Information Meetings: October 25, 2016

The next quarterly GRTC Pulse (Bus Rapid Transit) Project Public Information Meetings are scheduled.  The purpose of these meetings is to provide a status update of the Project.  Content of these meetings is identical; please plan to attend the meeting most convenient for your schedule.  Members of the media are invited to attend.

Multiple crews worked in multiple locations this week, making steady utility work progress on the south side of Broad Street between Thompson and Laurel Streets.

This week (Mon., Sept. 12, to Fri., Sept. 16), work moved eastward from N. Boulevard to Strawberry Street; as well as eastward from N. Davis Avenue to Meadow Street. Additional crews began working westward this week, from Laurel Street to Harrison Street. Crews performed test pitting and directional drilling operations, all part of utility relocation. Temporary closures of the curb lane, adjacent sidewalk and any bus stops located in the work zones will continue through mid-October. Work hours are from Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

2-Week Look-Ahead

For the week beginning Mon., Sept. 19, test pitting and directional drilling operations will continue both eastward and westward to Lombardy Street. Additional crews will work on setting of junction boxes, also part of utility relocation. This will occur at Thompson Street moving eastward. Work zones will be at the following locations:

Eastward from Thompson Street to N. Boulevard
Eastward from Strawberry Street to Lombardy Street
Eastward from Meadow Street to Lombardy Street
Westward from Harrison Street to Lombardy Street

For the week beginning Mon., Sept. 26, test pitting and directional drilling operations are expected to be complete. Work will continue on setting of junction boxes, as well as mandrel testing and pulling of fiber optic cable. These are part of utility relocation. Work will be occurring in the following locations:

Eastward from Thompson Street to N. Boulevard
Eastward from N. Boulevard to Lombardy Street
Westward from Laurel Street to Lombardy Street

Pardon Our Dust UPDATE

This week (September 6 -9), utility work continued along the south side of Broad Street, with crews heading eastward from Cleveland St. to near N. Boulevard, as well as eastward from Sheppard Street to N. Davis Street. We originally expected work would begin this week at Laurel Street moving westward. However, this work now will begin next week (week of September 12). The "No Parking" signs in the Laurel Street location were adjusted accordingly.

Next week, multiple crews will continue to work in the following multiple locations.

For the week beginning Mon., Sept. 12, utility relocation work (Test Pitting and Directional Drilling) will occur in the following areas:

Labor Day Weekend!

In observance of the Labor Day holiday weekend, construction activities in the field will stop on Friday, September 2 at Noon and not resume until Tuesday, September 6 at 7 a.m.

We wish you all a safe and enjoyable weekend!
Utility work on August 31 on the South side of Broad St at Boulevard. Traffic could pass by in all directions around the Work Zone and access to destinations remained open.
After Labor Day, multiple work crews will be in multiple locations at times on the south side of eastbound Broad Street between Thompson and Laurel Streets (the permitted work area). The work crew schedules are weather and progress-dependent, but this work is anticipated to move quickly and be complete by mid-October.
